1. Take the GRE (and the TOEFL, if necessary).

  • Applicants must take the GRE General Test, and are encouraged to take one advanced Subject Test in a field of their choice.
  • Students who have attended universities at which English is not the primary language of instruction must submit official TOEFL or IELTS scores. A TOEFL score of at least 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based test) or 100 (TOEFL iBT) is needed for admission. A minimum of 7 is required on the IELTS.
  • Applicants taking the TOEFL are encouraged to also take and submit official scores for the Tests of Spoken English (TSE) and of Written English (TWE). The TWE is often offered with the TOEFL, at no charge.
  • The Graduate School must receive official TOEFL and GRE scores directly from Educational Testing Service (ETS) before an acceptance is considered official.
  • The ETS codes for the Brandeis Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is 3092 (GRE) or 3261 (TOEFL).
  • For more information contact www.toefl.com or www.ielts.com.

4. Write a Statement of Purpose.

In essay form, state your reasons for undertaking graduate study. Describe your prior research experience. Applicants who have already developed interests in specific research areas should indicate these preferences. We recognize that students often discover other areas of interest as they are exposed to new fields.

Checks and money orders should be made payable to Brandeis University. There is a one-time fee waiver for Brandeis students, staff, and alumni. Applications received without the appropriate fee will not be processed.
