1. Take the GRE (and the TOEFL, if
necessary).
- Applicants must take the GRE General Test, and are
encouraged to take one advanced Subject Test in a field
of their choice.
- Students who have attended universities at which English
is not the primary language of instruction must submit
official TOEFL or IELTS scores. A TOEFL score of at
least 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based
test) or 100 (TOEFL iBT) is needed for admission. A minimum of 7 is required
on the IELTS.
- Applicants taking the TOEFL are encouraged to also
take and submit official scores for the Tests of Spoken
English (TSE) and of Written English (TWE). The TWE
is often offered with the TOEFL, at no charge.
- The Graduate School must receive official TOEFL and
GRE scores directly from Educational Testing Service
(ETS) before an acceptance is considered official.
- The ETS codes for the Brandeis Graduate School of
Arts and Sciences is 3092 (GRE) or 3261 (TOEFL).

or www.ielts.com.
2. Obtain an application form.
There are three ways to obtain an application form:
3. Request three letters of recommendation.
Request letters of recommendation from three individuals
who are familiar with your academic and/or research work.
A form which is to be filled out by each person writing
a recommendation letter is included with the application
form.
4. Write a Statement of Purpose.
In essay form, state your reasons for undertaking graduate
study. Describe your prior research experience. Applicants
who have already developed interests in specific research
areas should indicate these preferences. We recognize
that students often discover other areas of interest as
they are exposed to new fields.
5. Submit the completed application
and associated documents.
In a large envelope, place:
- The completed application form (2 copies).*
- The Statement of Purpose (2 copies).*
- The $55 application fee. Applications submitted on-line
at www.brandeis.edu/gsas/apply
require a $55 application fee. Electronic applications
require payment via credit card. For applications submitted
by mail the $55 application fee should be a check or
money order and should be securely attached to the application
form. Be sure that your name appears on the check. Checks
and money orders should be made payable to Brandeis
University. There is a one-time fee waiver for Brandeis
students, staff, and alumni. Applications received without
the appropriate fee will not be processed.
Applications should be submitted by January 15th** to
ensure full consideration.
- Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts (2
copies) from every college or university you have attended.
Transcripts should be sent to the applicant in a sealed
envelope signed across the flap by the registrar and
submitted to the GSAS with the application form.
- Letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation
should be sent to the applicant in a sealed envelope
signed across the flap by the referee and submitted
to the GSAS with the application form. Letters of recommendation
can also be submitted directly by the referee.
