Habitat:

Low areas in woods, swamps, floodplain forests, streambanks, marshes

Location relative to water:

Rooted onshore

Range:

Southern Canada and entire US except for southwestern states, Wyoming, and Montana

Flowers:

  • Orange-yellow and usually with brown spots
  • 1.5-3.0 cm long (0.6-1.2 inches)
  • Rear spur curves back around to run parallel to the sac for half its length

Leaves:

  • Ovate to oval
  • 3-9 cm long (1-4 inches)
  • Shallowly and irregularly toothed

Stems:

  • 30-100 cm long (12-40 inches)
  • Usually branched towards top

Fruit:

  • Capsule 2 cm long (1 inch)
  • Splits when mature to eject seeds
