Leaves:

  • Hollow, vase-like
  • Curved and upright from base of plant
  • Tapered to short petiole at base
  • 10-20 cm long (4-8 inches), 1.0-5.0 cm wide (0.4-2.0 inches)
  • Green or veined with red-purple
  • Winged
  • Smooth on outside
  • Downward-pointing hairs on upper part of inside

Flowers:

  • 5.0-6.0 cm wide (2.0-2.4 inches)
  • Grow singly on ends of leafless stalks 30-60 cm long (12-24 inches)
  • Perfect
  • Five sepals and petals
  • Dark-red purple

Fruit:

  • Five-chambered capsule
  • Numerous small seeds
