Habitat:

Marshes, standing water, riverbanks

Location relative to water:

Rooted onshore or in shallow water with emergent body

Range:

Wisconsin to Newfoundland, Alabama and Florida

Leaves:

  • Grow in whorls of two, three, and four
  • Up to 16 cm long (6 inches)

Stems:

  • Curved, several feet long
  • Underwater, bark thick and spongy

Flowers:

  • Purplish to pink
