Cap/Body:
- Shape: flat, round; rounded, conical shape when young, becoming sunken in the center and wavy along the margin with age
- Size: 5-13 cm (2-5”) in diameter
- Color: grey to dull grey-brown
- Distinguishing feature: fibrous surface, fibers extending radially from center; dull coloration
Underside/Stalk:
- Gills: attached; moderately distant spacing; white
- Stalk: 8-13 cm (3-5”) tall, 1-2 cm (0.5-1”) thick; white; fibrous texture
Growth location/Season:
- Season: May-October
- Range: throughout the Eastern United States and Southeast Canada, as far west as
- Habitat: decaying deciduous wood, either on logs, stumps or debris
Spore Print: white
Other: This fungus is one of the first easily visible mushrooms to appear in the spring. It is also called Oudemanisella platyphylla by some mycologists
