Gall maker: Gnorimoschema gallæsolidaginis, a moth caterpillar (seen in cross-section). (Order Lepidoptera, Family Gelechiidae).

Shape and Size: Stem gall. Elongate, vaguely "spindle shaped." Size observed by this author at 2.5cm in length

Location: On stems of goldenrod (Solidago sp.) plants, summer.

Color: Color is the same as the overall stem structure.

Stem galls similar to the Elliptical goldenrod gall may occur as a result of infestation from other species of Lepidoptera.
