Location:
  • Widely distributed
  • Found in on roadsides and other open grassy places
Characteristics:
  • Up to 1.2 m or 4 feet tall
  • Not native to North America
Chicory leaf
Leaves:
  • Appear dandelion-like: jagged, with deep lobes--but unlike a dandelion, have no white juice that comes out of the broken stem
Flower:
  • June-October
  • Composite flower
  • Disk shaped, feathery in appearance
  • Rays have square, fringed ends
  • Flowers are stalkless, hug the stem
  • Usually blue, although can be white or (very rarely) pink

Uses:

A blue dye can be made from the leaves of the chicory plant.
