Toothbrush
A toothbrush is a vital accessory that many outdoorsmen tend to forget. A gum infection can set in quickly in the woods and can become an abscess without proper dental hygiene. A tooth abscess can literally kill its victim overnight with a fever of over 100 degrees. Toothpaste is optional, but a toothbrush is a necessity.

If while trying to pack light, you forgot your toothbrush, an old-fashioned tooth cleaner will suffice. A twig brush is made by chewing a section of green twig until the end is frayed and fibrous. The frayed end is then used to scrub the teeth and gums. Care should be taken to avoid using twigs from poisonous shrubs like dogwood. Birch, maple, oak, pine, poplar, and sassafras, thistle, and witch hazel can be safely used to make a twig brush.
