Location:

  • Pasture lands, recently cleared areas, waste areas, open woodland

Characteristics:

  • Tall perennial herb
  • distinctive elongated clusters of berries

 

 
 

 

Uses:

  • Root wash can be used for sprains or swelling
  • Leaves can be ingested as an emetic (to induce vomiting)
  • WARNING! All parts of the plant are mildly poisonous, especially the roots

Leaves:

  • Alternate, simple, long petioles
  • Toothless, oval in shape

Stem:

  • Stout, smooth purplish stem

 

 

Fruiting Structures:

  • Distinctive elongated clusters of purplish fruits, with shiny black seeds
  • Flowers white or green, 5 petals, August-November
