Sassafras (Sassafras albidum)

  Sassafras

Location: Found often in forest clearings and openings, particularly moist and sandy soils.

Characteristics:

  • Deciduous tree
  • Tree or thicket-forming shrub form.
  • Short and spreading branches.
  • Height: 9-18 m (30-60 ft)

Uses:

 
 

 

Leaves:

  •  8-13cm (3-5 in) long, 4-10 cm (1-4 in) wide
  • Usually present in 3 different elliptical forms: 3 lobes, 2 lobes (mitten shape) and no lobe (round, egg form)
  • Not toothed
  • Shiny above, usually velvety hair beneath
  • Spicy odor in crushed leaves

Bark:

  • Grey-brown color
  • Grows thick and deeply furrowed
  • Spicy odor in crushed bark

Buds:

  • True end bud present.
