Sphagnum Moss (Sphagnum spp.)

  Sphagnum Moss

Location:

  • Acidic pH of water and soil
  • Found in wet areas, like bogs

Characteristics:

  • Shallow roots, in thick, dense clumps
  • Can form a “bog mat” when it grows thickly together, which can support human weight

 

 
 

 

Uses:

  • Works as a sponge, because intricate capillary tubes allow for water absorption
  • Dried moss can be used as good tinder

 

Leaves:

  • Toothed, tiny size
  • Typically green, but can be yellow, red, pink or brown
  • Grow in thick tufts close to the stem

Notes:

  • Was used in the First World War as surgical dressings when cotton could not be found.
