Typical Orb Weavers

Genus: Argiope

The garden spiders

These spiders spin orbs in order to catch their prey. Thus their name typical orb weavers. Orbs are the stereotypical webs that we think of with web lines coming in like spokes of a wheel and then circular radii spinning out from the center. These spiders, which can be unlike the other genus's are usually found sitting right in the center of their web. (Others may be sitting in a retreat outside of the web).
Notice the dorsal stripe on the thorax and abdomen of this spider. It also has a soft background color of gray/brown. On either side of the stripe on the abdomen you can also see spots, though faintly.
LOCATION: Common throughout the United States.
