The Crab Spiders

Genus: Xysticus
Species: elegans
You will have found this spider on bark and under leaves and rocks in the woods. They also like low plants. This spider is similar to Xysticus transversatus.
Notice the black markings on the thorax and the abdomen. The abdomen has three pairs of large blotches near its rear alternating with the lighter brown areas. The legs have black striping as well.
Notice the spaced out eyes and the small chelicerae. Even the chelicerae are striped.
LENGTH: Female: 8-10mm Male: 6-7mm
LOCATION: New England and adjacent Canada south to Georgia and west to the Rockies.
