The Amaranth Family is characterized by flowers that grow up in spikes or clusters flowers that are sometimes hidden by the bracts (modified leaves at the base of the flower). There are generally as many stamens as sepals, (modifed flowers). They can have simple alternate or opposite leaves. The genus we found, Celosia have 5 sepals, along with 5 stamens. They have alternate leaves which are entire or lobed. The flowers are commonly white, red ora silvery color. There are about 50 species in our area.
