Nightshade or Tomato

Family

(Solanaceae)

The Nightshade Family include tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers. Typically flowers in this family have 5 petals, and come in 5 parts. They have fruits or berries, but be careful because some of them are poisonous. The stamens come from the corolla and extend outward. In the particular genus that we found the male reproductive organs, the stamen and pistil join together to form a beak. The leaves are alternate, although for some species it may seem that they are opposite, (falsely opposite), but really are alternate. There are about 50 species in our area.
