Mugo Pine

Pinus mugo

Mugo pine is a commonly planted shrub and is one of the only pines that grows in this manner, rather than as a tree. This specimen was found growing on the north side of the Bernstein-Marcus administration building at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.
Needles are in bundles of two and are short (~2" (5cm) long).
Cones are very small and rest above the branch they are growing on. The cone scales peel open almost like flower petals.
