Description: Genus Notonecta is one of two North American genera in the Notonectidae or Backswimmer family. Notonecta have 4 segmented antennae and are longer than 10 mm. The back of these bugs slopes backwards toward the rear of the abdomen and downward to the sides. Backswimmers have deep bodies and swim on their backs using their long fringed swimming legs and are often brightly colored in a variety of patterns.

Habitat: These bugs are found in quiet ponds and are very widespread in their distribution.

The specimen in the photos was found in Yakus Pond, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA in late November 2002.
