In Their Own Words -- Reflections on the Brandeis Genetic Counseling Program

Class of 2007

class of 2007

"Its a solid program that changed the course of my life, really, toward one full of meaningful work."

Class of 2006

"The superior quality of the Brandeis training program is undeniably reflected in the excellent care its graduates give to their patients on a daily basis! I continuously find myself drawing upon these training experiences to facilitate my own growth as a new healthcare provider. The Brandeis program has nurtured genetic counselors with this essential foundation for years, which in turn has made the genetic counseling profession so successful as a whole."

"My two years at Brandeis were everything I could have hoped them to be. The directors and faculty were an amazing group of caring and knowledgable people. My classes were interesting, the internships were challenging and really prepared me for a GC job, and the experiences I got through the program were invaluable. I felt part of a mini-family during my two years; it was nice to have such support during the program and have it continue even now after I have graduated."

Class of 2005

"The Brandeis genetic counseling program emphasizes open-mindedness and empathy in training us to be well-rounded counselors within a stimulating environment. As a recent graduate, I feel like I can talk with classmates and faculty and receive support and encouragement when needed most - as a brand new genetic counselor working in the real world!"

"The Brandeis GC Program provided the experience I needed to feel confident when I graduated and began my new career. We were lucky to have some of the best hospitals to work in, and an amazing staff of well known doctors, genetic counselors and psychologists to teach us the very best. Our class was the perfect size: we started out as 10 strangers, each with a different story to tell, and different reasons why we chose genetic counseling. After two years, we have all become close friends. We call each other when we need help with a complex case, or just to go have dinner. It was an unforgettable program."

Class of 2004

"First, Brandeis gives us personal experience spending time with individuals and families with genetic conditions in many different ways. These experiences broadened my knowledge and appreciation of what life outside the medical setting is like for these individuals, knowledge that cannot be acquired by simply reading about cases in a textbook. Secondly, all of our classes are taught by professors or outside lecturers who are experts in their field and genuinely enjoy passing on their knowledge. I felt we got the best of the best to teach all of our classes. This made the classes challenging and rewarding. Finally, I feel like the entire program faculty truly cared about all of us and we weren't simply treated like numbers. At the annual Brandeis reunion, anyone can see how much like family everyone is treated."

"Genetic counseling is a midlife career change for me, and a complete departure from my previous work. I cannot imagine two years more well spent than my two at the Brandeis GC program. The faculty provided a nearly perfect balance of academic rigor and personal support. My classmates were (and are) the smartest, coolest, most delightful bunch of people on earth. Now I have a deeply satisfying job as the first GC in a community health system. To any middle-agers out there considering a career change: go for it -- and give Judith Tsipis a call."

"The Brandeis Genetic Counseling program is unique because it offers you the opportunity to develop much more than your knowledge in genetics/counseling. Through this program you will learn how to become a professional, you will learn how to appreciate different cultural perspectives, you will learn about yourself and grow as a person, and you will learn how to work with the unexpected. You will also make some amazing colleagues/friends along the way."

Class of 2003

"Through the Brandeis GC program, I had the opportunity to work with many of the region's counselors, both in the clinic and in the classroom. Because of this, I felt very connected to the professional community and easily found a job upon graduation.

The directors of the program are extremely approachable and are readily available to students to discuss any issue, be it academic or personal.

One of my favorite aspects of the program was the way in which students were encouraged to apply a shared knowledge base obtained in the classroom to their own unique array of backgrounds and internship experiences, such that I as an individual was able to focus on those areas of most interest to me personally.

The director of clinical placements really makes things happen! With a lot of hard work and some creative thinking, she was able to arrange for me to do a clinical rotation outside of the country."

"My experiences in the Genetic Counseling Program at Brandeis really helped shape me in to the person I am today. I learned so many important lessons, not just professionally, but in all aspects of life. I feel like I am a stronger, smarter and more compassionate person now than I ever expected to be when I first decided I would become a genetic counselor. The faculty at Brandeis are an amazing group of people who encourage and foster this growth, and I think they take as much joy in watching their students develop and flourish as we do as we are experiencing it."

Class of 2002

"Most graduate programs promise to enhance your mind, this one goes beyond that and enriches your soul."

"I had a wonderful learning experience while in the Brandeis GC Program. In terms of the coursework and training I found that the program struck a good balance between scientific and psychosocial concepts. It's focus on disability awareness as well is unlike any other program. If I had to pick one, single aspect that I have come to appreciate the most it would be the supportive environment. The faculty and administration was always responsive to the students as individuals and as a group. My classmates and I always felt comfortable approaching any one of them for help with any matter, educational or even personal. I'll always have fond memories of our time there, and the long lasting friendships that I made."

Class of 2001

"The Brandeis GC program embraced my ethnic roots and encouraged me to explore my creativity while providing well balanced academics that focused on scientific knowledge, people savvy, and cultural literacy. But that's what every program should do. What makes Brandeis special is the human warmth of its professors and the fact that, thanks to such "well-rounded" prep, I now have the skills" and professional confidence" to work as a genetic counselor with a business, writing, publishing and design edge."

"The Brandeis Genetic Counseling Program was my first choice and I was thrilled to be accepted. After several years of working in the field, I am still very pleased with my choice. I feel that my graduate training at Brandeis not only gave me a solid foundation in genetics and counseling techniques but also provided a much richer experience by giving me a broader understanding of a variety of issues that are central to genetic counseling including legal, ethical, research, disability, and health care policy issues. Another highlight of my experience was the opportunity to participate in clinical rotations in diverse clinical settings at well-known centers throughout the Boston and greater New England area. This allowed me to work with different professionals and see a variety of clinical settings, counselor roles, counseling styles, and subspecialties. Another strength of the Brandeis program is the faculty's encouragement of student feedback and incorporation of these suggestions to fine-tune the program to meet the needs of a constantly evolving field. Above all, Brandeis provided this challenging academic and clinical training in a collegial, nurturing, cooperative learning environment. I feel that I left Brandeis with a network of supportive colleagues and the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary for continued professional growth and a successful career in genetic counseling."

Class of 1999

"The faculty and students of the Brandeis Genetic Counseling Program are collegial and supportive with one another, creating an environment that encourages both intellectual and personal growth. I feel fortunate to have attended Brandeis and I appreciate the friends and colleagues that I met during my graduate training."

"It was a very intense time but the program felt like being in a large family. We classmates became very close and we still try to meet up at least once a year, although we live in very different parts of the world."

Class of 1998

Class of 1997

"The Brandeis Genetic Counseling program trained me in areas of psychosocial counseling and genetics that represented an ideal balance. Having known little about "Counseling" when I joined the program, I can truly say that the Brandeis program prepared me as a genetic counselor in ways that I appreciate on a daily basis. Thanks to the training I received, I appreciate genetic counseling as both an art and a science. The mentorship, passion, and care with which the program has been built and designed makes this a top notch genetic counseling program."

Class of 1996

"What I liked most about the Brandeis Genetic Counseling Program was the directors' responsiveness to our feedback. I felt that our comments were taken seriously and that Judith and Kathryn wanted to make this program work well for students of different backgrounds and strengths. Our class was very diverse in terms of our professional backgrounds, so we learned a lot from each other as well as from our professors. And the internships in the Boston medical centers are also a strength of the program: we got to meet many well-respected genetics experts during our training. I think the program has a great balance between the science and the counseling aspects of genetic counseling. I have now worked at several different centers as a genetic counselor and feel like I've been well prepared for the various jobs I've held."

Class of 1995

"I will be forever indebted for the opportunity afforded to me, and for the patient nurturing that resulted in so much personal growth. I count Judith and Kathryn amongst my dearest friends."

"My two years in the Brandeis Genetic Counseling program were filled with learning in the truest sense of the word, learning that went far above and beyond classrooms and textbooks. Meeting and working with people with various disabilities was an enriching experience that has informed everything that I have done since. The broad range of clinical internships laid a solid foundation that enables me to practice in any specialty of Genetic Counseling. I am honored to be back at Brandeis teaching human genetics for our first year students."

Class of 1994

"Brandeis is a program with a heart -- the people I met there changed my life forever."
