This program is designed to benefit sophomore and junior Brandeis University students. During the summer of 2000, 19 Brandeis undergraduate students participated in the 2000 Summer Program. Six of the students were Brandeis juniors returning to the program, having received fellowship support in their sophomore year.

The Hughes Summer Fellowship Program is conducted over a ten weeks period, beginning in early June of each summer and ending in mid-August. Each student receives a $5,000 stipend for their participation. The Hughes Summer Fellowship Program strongly encourages minority Brandeis students to participate in this program.

Activities of the Hughes Summer Fellows

The students attend weekly lunches during which time they listen to lectures, given by members of the Brandeis biology and biochemisty faculty. The lectures are designed to introduce the students to a range of related disciplines and fields.

The students write abstracts describing the goals, results, and conclusions of their summer research. These abstracts become part of an Abstract booklet, and are distributed to other Fellows and scientific audience members during the Mini-Symposium.

The Mini-Symposium is the culminating experience of the Hughes Summer Program. This symposium gives the undergraduate students an opportunity to provide formal, verbal communication of their research to a scientific body comprised of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate and undergraduate students.
