Available Equipment:
The Confocal Imaging Lab has the following imaging equipment available for use by faculty and students:
- Leica TCS SP2 Spectral Confocal Microscope AOBS (acousto - optical beam splitter) system with a 405 laser. The system is attached to a Leica DMIRC-2 Inverted Microscope.
Objectives include: 10x HCPlan APO CS 0.40, 20x HCPlan APO CS .70, 40x HCX Plan APO 1.25 oil, 50x NPlan .90 oil, 63x HCX Plan APO 1.40 oil, 100x HCX Plan APO 1.40.
- MultiPhoton Leica TCS SP2 Spectral Confocal Microscope AOBS (acousto - optical beam splitter). Attached to Leica DMLFSA upright microscope. Objectives include: HC PL FLUOTAR 10x 0.30 HCX APO 20x 0.50 W U-V-I, Leica 40x HCX APO .80 W U-V-I. Coherent Chameleon tunable diode pump laser. Micro-G Vibration table.
Ancillary Equipment
- Dell Optiplex 745. This computer has a full copy of the Leica Imaging package with addition imaging software. Software includes: Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe Illustrator, Canvas, Microsoft Office, Image J, Amira 4.1 and Neurolucida 5.05.4 confocal modular.
- Dell Precision work station 340
- Three Epson photo Quality ink jet printers. R-800
- Epson 9600 ultrachrome large format printer (44-inch) PC base with Optiplex 745. Microsoft Office, Adobe PhotoShop CS2, Illustrator CS2, Image Ready, and Canvas X.

Digital cameras: Nikon DIOO - 6.1 effective megapixel with 55 macro lens.
The Confocal Imaging lab can no longer process 35mm film for slides or 35mm black and white film for printing.
Signing up for the Leica SP2 Confocal Microscope
As before, each time block is 3 hrs.
- You can sign-up only two weeks in advance. (i.e. if you are signing during the week of Nov 15th, you can sign for the weeks of Nov 22nd and 29th, but not for the week of Dec 6th).
- You can sign-up for no more than two time-blocks during the prime time/week (Prime time defined as 9AM-6PM, Mon through Fri).
- If you have already signed up for two time-blocks and prime slots for the following week are still available on Sunday, you can sign up for a 3rd time-block for that week.
- Any day during the week, you can sign up for an open time-block for that or the following day.

To sign up using the web calendar.
- Go to center column (Public Calendar) and click on the drop down menu.
- Find Leica Confocal and click on it.
- If this is your first time. Please contact the Confocal Lab @ 6-2682 or email dougherty@brandeis.edu. You will need to be trained and supervised for you first few sessions. You will also be given a login name and password.
(Do not use your unet name and password).
- If you are a current user please be sure to add your contact number.
If your plans change, please cancel your reservation promptly as this system is heavily used.
