Course organization

Meetings

The course will meet Fridays 2-4 on the dates shown above.

Student responsibilities

Each student is expected to attend every class prepared to give a full presentation on the paper being discussed.  This means that each student before entering the classroom must know (and be able to clearly explain) the methods, results and interpretation of every experiment in the paper.  Students should also be able to clearly describe the motivation for the paper:  what problem does it address and how does it go beyond the existing literature.  Please be prepared to defend your interpretation of the experiments; you should say what you think that the experimental results prove, not what the authors claim that they prove.

 

If an emergency has prevented you from properly preparing for one of the classes, please contact me before the start of the class.  In general, I prefer that people who have not prepared not attend.

Auditing

In the interest of fairness to students taking the class for credit, auditing by graduate students is not permitted.  Postdocs can audit with the instructor's permission.
