Gerbils
September 1999
Background:
I had just come back from brushing my teeth on the morning of the 15th and was changing. I saw something awry out of the corner of my eye, and it turned out to be the cat inside the gerbil cage. Gizmo was casually watching the white gerbil venture in and out of the flower pot in the cage.
The ash-colored gerbil was nothing to be found. I didn't think Gizmo could have eaten him without a trace in the seven minutes or so I'd been away from my room. I had to go to work, so I locked the cat out of my room and left for the day.
When I returned, Gizmo was homing in on the base of a wall in my room, and sure enough, I saw a nose poke out of a gap in the base trim of the wall. To capture him, I left some food by the opening and camped out on the floor waiting for him. I fell asleep immediately, but conveniently enough, the gerbil nibbled on my elbow while he was wandering around. I slid a wiffle bat in front of the opening, chased him around the room, and eventually caught him.

While chasing him around the room

The ordeal left him thirsty apparently.
